The library will be hosting three film screenings as part of its Americans and the Holocaust programming.
The schedule is as follows:
- Professor Leslye Friedberg will screen episode one of “The Plot Against America,” an HBO miniseries produced by David Simon and Ed Burns and based on the novel of the same name by Philip Roth. That will be followed by “A Night at the Garden,” a documentary by Marshall Curry, and a discussion of both films. The viewing will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22 in the library’s boardroom. Leslye Friedberg, Professor Emeritus, currently teaches film courses on the Holocaust through Gratz College and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
- Professor Leslye Friedberg will screen “The Mortal Storm,” a 1940 feature film based on Phyllis Bottome’s novel of the same name. The film, which stars James Stewart, Margaret Sullivan, and Frank Morgan, follows a German family as they are divided by the Nazi regime. A discussion of the film will follow the screening. The viewing will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29 in the library’s boardroom. - Project co-director Patti Davidson will screen “Nazi Town, USA,” a PBS American Experience documentary directed by Peter Yost and Edna Albuquerque. The documentary tells the largely unknown story of the German American Bund, which established chapters across the country, held rallies alongside the Ku Klux Klan, and ran summer camps for children centered on Nazi ideology. The Bund’s anti-Semitism mixed with “Americanism” raised issues then that we’re still facing now. A discussion will follow the screening. The viewing will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12 in the library’s board room.
The Americans and the Holocaust will be on display at Upper Sandusky Community Library, along with a series of related special events, from Aug. 19 to Sept. 30.
